JAPINDA News Article

Tokyo International University (TIU), established in 1965 by Taizo Kaneko, is a private institution located in the vibrant city of Kawagoe. The university is renowned for its programs that seamlessly integrate Japanese traditions with a global perspective. One of its hallmark offerings, the English Track Program (E-Track), was launched in 2014 and attracts students from over 60 countries. This program offers degrees in business economics, international relations, and digital business and innovation, all fully delivered in English. Additionally, TIU provides Japanese language courses, facilitating international students’ immersion in Japanese culture and improving their career prospects within Japan. Currently, the university hosts over 1,700 international students, contributing to a collective student body of approximately 7,000 across its four campuses.

The campuses of TIU are strategically located in Tokyo and Saitama. Notably, there are three campuses in Saitama, two campuses in Kawagoe and the Sakado campus, which is dedicated to sports-related programs, and the newest campus located in Ikebukuro. A distinctive feature of TIU is its commitment to small class sizes and tailored educational experiences, fostering a student-centered learning environment supported by faculty with extensive global expertise. With modern facilities, comprehensive career support, and close proximity to Tokyo, TIU stands out as a dynamic institution conducive to both global career pursuits and academic excellence. Students at TIU embark on a promising journey toward achieving their educational and professional aspirations.

Across its international relations, Tokyo International University (TIU) has built strong ties with Indonesia in particular, reflecting its focus on global education. TIU actively welcomes Indonesian students, enriching its diverse campus. Attracted by TIU’s English-based programs in business, economics, and international relations, Indonesian students can pursue a world-class education without language hurdles.

TIU’s partnerships with Indonesian universities and high schools further solidify this connection. Through exchanges, scholarships, and joint projects such as the annual summer program, which helps new students get accustomed to the campus environment and life in Japan as an international student. TIU helps students make a smooth transition to studying in Japan from the very. These collaborations demonstrate TIU’s commitment to developing global talent and strengthening academic ties between the two countries. Japan’s reputation for safety and technological advancement is a major drawpoint for many Indonesian students, along with TIU’s supportive atmosphere, and active alumni network that allows for the fostering of cultural exchange and career opportunities, especially for Indonesian students. TIU resonates with Indonesia’s growing interest in global education, making it a popular choice for Indonesian students seeking academic excellence.

TIU has welcomed hundreds of students from Indonesia, making it a significant university for Indonesian students studying abroad. These students receive guidance and support from PPI (Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia), a national organization for Indonesian students. The organization plays an important role in building a community for Indonesians living and studying in Japan.

In the Kanto area, PPIJ Kanto is responsible for overseeing and assisting Indonesian students, including those at TIU. Members of PPIJ Kanto, especially those from TIU, are actively involved in helping new students adjust to their environment. They provide valuable support by sharing information, organizing events, and creating opportunities for friendship and entertainment such as the sports game and many Indonesian celebrations that are held in Japan. This creates a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for Indonesian students at TIU, helping them feel more at home in a foreign country. The big organization PPIJ is committed to managing and supporting Indonesian students across Japan by dividing responsibilities by region. This is why PPIJ Kanto was established, to focus on the needs of students in the Kanto area.

PPI is passionate about reaching more Indonesian students and encourages them to join the organization. PPI TIU also aims to inspire active participation both inside and outside PPI, strengthening the bonds among students and creating memorable experiences for every student.

In 2024, PPI TIU actively participated in university festivals by organizing cultural booths and performances that showcased Indonesia’s rich heritage. From traditional dances and music to Indonesian cuisine, these events allowed us to share our culture with Japanese students and the broader community. Additionally, PPI TIU collaborated on language exchange programs and volunteering projects, fostering mutual understanding and stronger connections with our Japanese peers.

Another highlight of our year was the Futsal League, where Indonesian students formed teams and competed in a friendly yet competitive environment. This program not only encouraged physical activity and teamwork but also provided a fun way to build fellowship with other PPI TIU members. PPI TIU also conducted a studi banding (study visit) program with other PPI Branches from other universities in Japan. Through this initiative, PPI TIU exchanged ideas, shared experiences, and discussed ways to strengthen the Indonesian student network in Japan. It was a valuable opportunity to learn from one another and explore collaborative efforts for future projects.

These activities reflect our dedication to fostering community, promoting Indonesian culture, and building meaningful relationships both within and beyond PPI TIU.

Being an Indonesian student at TIU is a combination of excitement and challenge. To most of us, adapting to life in Japan, a fascinating and immensely different country, is a big thrill and challenge. Japan’s orderly and disciplined life is a source of wonder, but an acquired one, especially for students who come from Indonesia’s free and collectivist society.

A common observation is a deep admiration for Japan’s security and efficiency of life. Public transportation, clean streets, and courtesy of its populace are much-discussed items. Nevertheless, a few students admit to having a tinge of wistfulness for Indonesia, for its friendly social life, its food, and its collectivist togetherness that is distinctly lacking in our society. Despite its quirks, PPI TIU appreciates Japan’s offerings, including high-quality access to education, career development, and familiarity with cosmopolitan life. Japan’s work ethic and sense of responsibility have a deep impact on most of us, challenging us to work towards excellence in studies and life.

Being an Indonesian student at TIU is a great opportunity for growth, with PPI TIU becoming a “second family”, where peers can share laughs, support each other, and celebrate Indonesian traditions. This balancing act between studying and belonging transforms life in Japan for us into an enriching experience.

Numerous Indonesian students pursuing higher education abroad, particularly at Tokyo International University (TIU), often explore varying career trajectories upon graduation. For instance, Nicholas Widodo embarked on his professional journey as a Web Database Developer at the Central Bank of Indonesia before transitioning to Japan, where he took on roles such as Teaching and Research Assistant at TIU. He further advanced his career as a Data Processing Assistant and ultimately secured a permanent position as an IT System Administrator at Moneytree. Nicholas Widodo exemplifies how international graduates leverage their education and experiences to thrive within the Japanese market after graduation.

In contrast, Fariq Prihandoko, the former chairman of PPI TIU, opted for a different career path, choosing to return to Indonesia. Fariq began his professional career prior to graduation, working as a freelance Qualitative Researcher with Kantar, a prominent Indonesian market research company. Following his graduation, he returned to Indonesia to continue his work with Kantar, where he ultimately advanced to a full-time role as a Research Executive in the qualitative division, specializing in the tobacco and technology sectors.

In the future, PPI TIU picture a collaborative partnership between JAPINDA and PPI TIU that not only maintains communication but also strengthens our relationship. This connection aims to promote meaningful exchanges between Japan and Indonesia, fostering a deeper understanding between our cultures. PPI TIU believes in the power of inclusivity and are open to exploring many opportunities that engage Indonesian students.

Cultural exchange programs are particularly crucial, as they allow participants to submerge themselves in each other’s traditions, values, and daily lives. Such experiences enrich the lives of students and create lasting bonds between our countries. Furthermore, PPI TIU sees massive value in language learning designed to promote both Indonesian and Japanese languages. By offering language workshops, conversation events, and other educational activities, PPI TIU can allow students to communicate more effectively and appreciate the delicacy of our own languages.

PPI TIU is truly excited about the possibility of collaborating on these programs, as they not only enhance students’ skills but also cultivate friendships that can bridge our two nations. Together, PPI TIU can create a vibrant network of learners and cultural ambassadors that will pave the way for a brighter, more connected future between Japan and Indonesia.

We are excited that PPI TIU will be collaborating with JAPINDA as part of our shared goal to strengthen the relationship between Japan and Indonesia. As Indonesian students living in Japan, PPI TIU truly appreciates the efforts of JAPINDA in bridging the gap between our two countries. This partnership offers us the chance to be part of a larger movement that connects both cultures in meaningful ways. JAPINDA’s main vision aligns closely with ours as students studying abroad. We are thankful for the opportunities this collaboration brings, whether through cultural exchange, educational, or development projects.

For corporate members of JAPINDA, together, PPI TIU will build new pathways for stronger ties between Japan and Indonesia. Your support is necessary in creating lasting changes that benefit both countries, especially in business and education.

To individual members and global readers, PPI TIU hopes you are just as excited as we are about this collaboration. It will help deepen mutual understanding of the rich diversity and cultures that define both Indonesia and Japan. Your involvement in events and initiatives will create more positive impacts on our communities.

Thank you for your ongoing participation. PPI TIU looks forward to growing this connection and making a lasting difference together.
